ROV
Today a ROV can perform a variety of different tasks previously carried out exclusively by divers. This applies to both simpler types of inspections and to heavy underwater construction work. Even if a ROV cannot replace the diver, in certain tasks it may be advantageous to use an ROV such as in:
- Areas which the diver cannot reach (pipes, etc.)
- Inspections
- Greater depths
- Cable positioning/survey
- Cable laying
- Seabed survey
ROVs can have a variety of appearances and be equipped in many ways but they differ mainly in size and hence the capacity/strength to use the manipulators, move about in strong currents, etc. Smaller ROVs may be equipped only with a video camera (such as a Hyball) while larger ones can have one or two manipulators (arms with claws), special tools, multiple cameras, etc.
The kind of ROV chosen for a particular project will naturally depend on the tasks to be performed. For the laying of cables or inspections a small ROV that is easier to set up, requires less staff and is therefore cheaper can be sufficient.
If one wishes to perform more advanced tasks and also requires the ROV to be able to perform tasks underwater, move about in strong currents or include special equipment such as cable positioning/survey equipment, a larger ROV is deployed. In the final analysis it is the customer's requirements that determine the choice of machine.
